The Drive to Succeed
Sal Gonzales views himself as the head of a family. Not only as a husband and father of three children, but as the owner of Culver City Volvo, a business celebrating 50 years in 2011. “Everyone who works here feels like they are a part of a family,” he shares. “The community is an extension of that family. That’s why it’s very important for us to give back.”
Sal and his wife Ann, a former teacher, invest both time and resources into LaBallona Elementary, especially in the successful Operation Outreach program. Dedicated to reducing illiteracy, the Gonzaleses provide books at the beginning of the school year for the eager students and regularly check in to see how the kids are progressing.
But their efforts do not end in the classroom. At the end of the school year, Sal invites the students on a special walking field trip at Culver City Volvo, where they learn the ins and outs of running a successful dealership. “I want them to see the business and operation,” he says. “I also want to show them as a role model how I interact with customers as well as people that are employed here. When I’m in the classroom with my wife in the beginning of the year, it’s a little more formal. When they come here they get to see a business in operation and hopefully they are influenced by that.”
In this short video, Sal explains how he and his family at Culver City Volvo pay it forward in the community.
