Tall Order

Robert “Big Bob” LeBrun has been a bouncer in the South Bay for more than 35 years. You may have seen him manning the door at the North End Bar & Grill or grooving to the blues at Café Boogaloo or staring down Hells Angels at The Grist Mill. At nearly 7 feet tall, he cuts an imposing frame, but at least he’ll give you fair warning before he decides to use it.

Meet Alessandro Zulli, a student at Palos Verdes Peninsula High, Rolling Hills Estates. Alessandro was one of 254 talented students from 30 countries and 30 states who won a scholarship to attend the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy (HLCA) at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama earlier this year. Just as school was about to wrap up for the year, the bright teen shared a few of his adventures at this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

On the Right Path

It should come as no surprise that the South Bay is one of the best places to own a bicycle. The Strand, the sights, the weather, a bevy of bike shops … need we say more? One of our area’s biggest bike supporters is the South Bay Bicycle Coalition (SBBC), a local organization made of two-wheel enthusiasts. Formed in 2009 with the intent of going after a RENEW grant, this volunteer advocacy group would help steer the creation of the South Bay Bicycle Master Plan. We took a ride with South Bay Initiative director Marissa Christiansen to see how that plan was moving along.
