A local volleyball player digs into the South Bay’s beach scene.
Happy Anniversary
7:45a.m. out the door and heading for the ocean with pepe, a 9’6” beauty of a stand-up paddleboard.
A few minutes later effortlessly make it past the break at the same time as another SUPer who just so happens to be male, fit, and about my age…i’m the only girl in the bar and he still doesn’t even offer a ‘good morning’. a little lame, but i venture north.
8ish spot my good friend, tamara, riding pink panther. together we paddle towards manhattan pier.
8:30ish run into some friends SUPing and surfing so stick around for a good while. a pod of dolphins have decided to grace our presence.
Laterish winds picking up a bit so decide to head back towards hermosa… the number of fisherman hanging over the pier has doubled.
Even laterish run into gene, owner of tarsan SUP shop and, needless to say, an excellent waterman.
10:00a.m. at my doorstep, peel wetsuit off, rinse off pepe, grind coffee beans, cue citizen cope soundtrack...what to do with the rest of my day?
i’m not alone when i say that
it’s mornings like these that make me feel
alive and connected with the town i live in.
Happy 100th Year Anniversary beautiful Manhattan Beach, thank you for being you.

I’m pursuing a dream that spits on my diploma and pretty much goes against left-brain logic: a career in professional beach volleyball. You wont find my “associates” and I wearing skinny ties or clicking our heels, but underneath our sunglasses is a fierce conviction to find the best games, the best partner, and compete in the best tournaments on the most beautiful beaches. I may report to the sandbox for work but after we RoShamBo for sides it’s all business, baby. Join me for the ride, won’t you?
