02/17/12WHAT {i} WORE no.5over the past week i've been fighting this lingering cold that has come and gone... and come and gone again! so yesterday i decided it's time to feel good again! so i threw on the brightest lipstick i could find, a cheerful polka-dot top, and my shit-kicker-biker-boots! (at least that's what my biker uncle calls them). and ya know what??? it kinda worked! this little diddy started to really pull me out of my funk! i guess you sometimes just need to trick your cold with a little bright lipstick! |
02/16/12Funky VintageThese two vintage clothing shops are located next door to one another on Hermosa Avenue in Hermosa Beach. I've passed by while driving a hundred times, so my curiosity was piqued and I finally paid them a visit. They are eclectic and funky, but if you have an eye for vintage finds you might just come across something you've been searching for. I only quickly stopped in (without much notice from whoever was working) and took these pics with my iPhone. They are located at 1409 & 1411 Hermosa Avenue in Hermosa Beach. These kind of places are what give the beach cities charm and diversity, which I think is what makes them so great! |

02/14/12A little love...For those of you who may know Husband personally and question Him while he is out and about with the common-Dude, how can you let her write that about you?-you need to know a few things about Husband; first, he knows who he married and she has been making him squirm with sometimes inappropriate laughter for almost 9 years. Also, Husband is a pretty confident man and a few jokes about his inability to close closet doors isn’t really going to shake him up too much. But most importantly, what you may not know about Husband is that HE LIKES THE ABUSE. He admitted as much to me the other day when he said my blog is funnier when I am making fun of him. To which I immediately replied...No problemo! And also...um...honey...you know if you give me an inch, I... |

02/10/12Rainstorms and ReplicantsIt’s generally not considered “socially acceptable” to respond to someone’s upbeat statement with an overtly negative comment—it’s honestly just a step away from moving to a cave and shunning society. A friend of mine said to me yesterday, “I love the rain. We never get enough of it here in LA.” How did I respond? I told her, "I fricken hate it.” I’m almost positive I said it with a gruff, Walt Kowalski-like scowl on my face too. In retrospect, that wasn’t exactly a shining moment for me (my half-hearted attempt at an indirect apology). In my defense though, as a surfer, I see a rather different side of LA when it rains, and it’s not that great. About a week ago, I paddled out for... |

02/08/12Playing FavoritesHave you ever wondered if your parents had a favorite child and if so...was it you? I was the youngest, so clearly I believed that I was the favorite even though I got picked on the most and my brother farted on my head. My sister was the oldest and I’m pretty sure she thinks she got gypped because she had to be Responsible and Babysit Us On Her Summer Vacation. Also, she was the guinea pig of the bunch...I mean...the oldest has to be, right? My brother...well, he was the middle and the only boy, so, you know, he was the Handsome Hero. Who farted on my head. (Did I mention that?) Then there was yours truly, who will forever be remembered for sitting on a banana in the car while on Pike’s Peak in Colorado and also the fact that I once... |

02/03/12Skateboards and Swimming PoolsI try not to think that something’s impossible; in my mind, I just say that it’s improbable. Time travel? Doc Brown already made a flux capacitor, so the hard part’s over. Teleportation? Totally possible, I’m just not big on splicing myself with flies. Drive the speed limit? It can be done; it’s just really hard. However, I recently experienced a challenge that was so difficult and frustrating, that I had to label it as “completely impossible.” No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t do it: I tried to convince a lifelong New Yorker that LA is far superior to NYC (daunting task, I know). Unfortunately, that “debate” took up two hours of my life that I’ll never get back. Said New Yorker hit me hard... |

01/31/12the one that got awayMistakes. We make them. And after we make them we (hopefully) learn from them. I’d like to tell you about a particular mistake I made during last season…the story of the one that got away. Her name was—and still is—Pri, short for Priscilla, even shorter for professional beach volleyball player priscilla lima. The brazilian-born ball of fury blessed the beach of Hermosa last summer—specifically, the court that I had been training on all season with Adriano Ticao. I didn’t exactly know what she was trying to gain from her (late in the season) West Coast trip but we ended up side by side on numerous drills, and playing like so many others across our long stretch of sand. My coach gave Pri full clearance to... |

01/31/12Training Day(s)Recently, as I began the potty training process with Daughter, I was quickly reminded that there is Potty Training and then there is Poop Training. Potty training is all M&M’s and Unicorns but Poop Training is more like hellfire and rodents. Now, this is only my experience as I understand that there are kids in this world who just ...go poop...in the toilet...like it’s NO BIG DEAL. (Flashback to Poop-Training Son: saw a friend with his boys at the park and his son had just taken a poop. In the park bathroom. With no trauma inflicted on either party. I. Was. Amazed.) I held out a very small sliver of hope that Daughter would just poop like a normal person on the toilet and we would laugh and dance about how wonderful and easy... |

01/30/12Counter CultureIt’s official. The so-called “third wave” of coffee culture has finally crested in Los Angeles. Maxwell House, Folgers and Sanka at home and the beloved bottomless brew from Original Pantry Café down at Figueroa eventually gave way to our homegrown Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and the Starbucks phenomenon. This was a monumental improvement, to be sure, but franchised coffeehouses are themselves now yesterday’s flavor in a city that fully expects not just a decent latte but fair trade-certified, shade-grown, organic beans roasted in-house. Welcome to coffee’s third act. |

01/30/12The Real Mad Men and Women of the South BayMadison Avenue was long considered the center of the advertising universe, especially in the 1960s. But as that nostalgic decade drew to a close, a new breed of creative execs were making their mark in the advertising industry far away from midtown Manhattan. Their hard work, risk-taking and creative genius shifted the power center of advertising from the east coast to Southern California. Today, many of the best and brightest in advertising are located right here in the South Bay. We sat down with a few of them and discussed their shops, their clients and campaigns, and how being based in the beach cities informs their work and bolsters their creative spirit. |

01/30/12A (short) History of StokeSurfing, much like Hollywood, traffic and plastic surgery, is synonymous with Los Angeles. It’s an important part of this city’s culture and—dare I say it—even its history. For instance, back in the early 1900s, surfing had a hand in shaping the development of the South Bay. Henry E. Huntington was having a bit of trouble getting anyone to ride his Los Angeles-Redondo rail line, and he was looking for a way to boost ticket sales. After reading Jack London’s accounts of surfing in Hawaii, he contacted Irish-Hawaiian surfer George Freeth and hired him to put on “surfing demonstrations” at Redondo Beach. The ploy worked; hundreds of people gathered on a regular basis to watch Freeth surf, and he ended up becoming the... |

And then call you a dirty little liar. I’m sorry to call you names, but I have a hard time believing that there is no TV. 01/06/12Setting GoalsMy cute hubby and I spend each New Year’s Day at the Four Seasons, accompanied by some good Champagne and an old black journal we’ve been sharing for about ten years now. Each year, we look back at our previous goals and have a good laugh and toast to resolutions – it’s the making and sharing of them that matters more than the fulfillment at times. In the food, wine and healthy living categories, we’ve got a few noble goals that I think are worth sharing: 1) Kick the Can. My love affair with Diet Coke is a tawdry one that began when I was just a teenager scooping ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s on the Jersey Shore. It seemed smarter to drink some soda than indulge in Cherry Garcia and I... |

Each time I look at my son, I can’t help but wonder if this...this moment...is a moment that will be imprinted in his memory forever. Will he remember back tickles and renditions of Babymine at bedtime? Or the bunk beds he shares with his sister? Maybe his first skateboard. I wonder, if as a grown man, he will return to the park by his boyhood home and stare at the tree he so lovingly climbed and say to himself...it seemed so big when I was a boy. I am constantly amazed at the things he can now do for... Posted at 12:03 PM | Permalink | Comments: 5 |

12/14/11Gift of Tradition … With an Eye Towards DesignFor me, the holidays are about that warm feeling that sweeps over us around mid-November in anticipation of good things just around the corner. There are so many ways to give to those around us. I start with traditions-old and new. Here are a few simple ways to get in good with friends, family and even Mother Earth this holiday season. 12/06/11Cookie Crash CourseAs a kid, I always felt sad for friends whose cookie experience was limited to sad plastic tubes of “slice and bake” dough with store-bought frosting. In our family, cookies are second to nothing else at the holidays. From my Danish great-grandfather’s cherished klejners to my Mexican grandmother’s galletas de boda to my mom’s perfected chocolate chip recipe, holiday baking means getting out the cookie sheets. |
