When it comes to lighting, I'm a bit of a snob. Sorry, I just am. I certainly have made mistakes with light fixtures, and I still marvel at lighting done right and think, "I would have never thought of that!"  However, light fixtures need to be addressed when you are doing any sort of fixing up, renovating, building, or apartment hunting. It's such an easy thing to do when you are trying to make your space unique and inviting, especially if you are renting. If you are someone handy,  or know someone that is, then changing out fixtures should be no problem. If you are renting you should save the original fixture, then switch back before you move. A couple things to do when looking for fixtures: stay away from super contemporary fixtures (they just look dated after a short period of time), don't buy fixtures that require expensive or hard to find bulbs, a hanging light in a nook or a chandelier in a bedroom adds a nice design element, black shades look better than white, mixing metals is okay these days and actually adds more interest, look at decor magazines for inspiration and bring pictures with you when shopping.
