06/06/11First TriWhen I moved out here 15 years ago, there was no triathlon in Redondo Beach, no triathlon specialty store, or any triathlon club to join. If you were a triathlete you were among a small group of individuals with most of them living near San Diego. Now the Redondo Beach Triathlon is going into its seventh year, Triathlon LAB is the leading triathlon store in California, and the LA Tri Club just celebrated its 10-year anniversary. If you are someone that is thinking about doing their first triathlon let me warn you that once you finish your first triathlon you will find yourself looking at a calendar for the next triathlon to sign up for. Then very soon after that you will call yourself a triathlete. Your whole week will be about how you can juggle your schedule to find time to swim,... Posted at 10:24 AM | Permalink | Comments: 1 |

05/18/11The CraftI had my first encounter with beer at an early age. There's an image of my dad, a former LAPD motor cop, offering the two-year-old version of myself a sip of beer from his Coors can while his police buddies look on. Anyone else see the irony here? Truth is, I didn't care for the taste, and though I'd have a bottle of Heineken at a bar or party every once in a while, beer was never my first drink of choice. Well into my 30s, my palate is changing. And it's not a cocktail or glass of pinot I'm craving...it's beer. Good beer. Craft beer. Luckily the South Bay is full of great crafts on tap, especially here in Hermosa right by our offices. Happy hour anyone? There's Silvio's, Hennessey's, and the new Hot's Kitchen impressive beer list. There's even talk of a Craft Beer Festival started... Posted at 02:14 PM | Permalink | Comments: 3 |

05/09/11Fresh FareLet me air out the dirty laundry first...I'm on a cleanse. One of those detox programs that mix an elimination diet with supplements and grainy shakes that require a package of frozen berries, agave syrup and a strong blender to make them somewhat palatable. This all started when one of my co-workers dropped 15 pounds, a few pant sizes and enjoyed a sudden burst of energy after taking on the three-week program. Enlightened by his positive experience and feeling a little sluggish as of late, I decided to do a little research. Pretty interesting stuff, I discovered. And hey, if Gwyneth Paltrow endorses it, it has to be good, right? My dietician friends always find that part amusing. Mission accomplished, Gwyneth...program ordered, delivered and already on Day 7. I'm not going to go into... Posted at 01:15 PM | Permalink |

04/11/11Hermosa HappeningsBack in our Holiday Issue we opened up a conversation with local businesses and adjacent residents affected by the dust, debris and delays caused by the lengthy Pier Avenue construction and revitalization. With our own offices located south of the Pier, just off Hermosa Avenue, the staff got daily exposure to the traffic jams and detours caused by the project. While many had few nice things to say about the weary process itself, there was unanimous praise for the final result—a cleaner, wider and palm-lined commercial entryway to the city of Hermosa Beach. Several months later, we’re already seeing results as new business join other commercial visionaries on the block. One of those, Maison Luxe, celebrated with a Grand Opening party on April 1st that we were fortunate enough... |
