Shannon Ryan’s father, a successful surgeon, taught her how to manage money at an early age, and it became a passion for her. Today, Shannon runs an independent practice, Ryan & Associates–a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. Earlier in her career, Shannon was media representative for American Express Financial Advisors, appearing as an expert on Good Morning America, PBS, CNBC and many radio talk shows. She worked as a Field Vice President for Ameriprise Financial, coaching and leading more than 350 advisors in southern California. She then returned to private practice to be closer to home and her young family.
What would you like potential clients to know about your business?
“Wealth can complicate your life; even the most complex financial issues can be handled successfully with the help of an experienced advisor. For 19 years I have been helping clients stay focused on their lives and businesses while making great financial decisions year in and year out. Through outstanding client service we become our client’s financial partners, not just their money managers.”
Was there a defining moment in your career that guided you to where you are now?
“During my second year of private practice, I lost a client to cancer. He left behind a wife and two daughters. The cancer had returned suddenly and took his life quickly. We already had a comprehensive financial plan in place when he received the news. A week before he died, we had an emotional meeting; he shared with me the impact planning his financial future had made in his final days. He thanked me for giving him the gift of knowing his family would be financially secure after he was gone. I have never forgotten that moment. We never know what life holds around the corner.”
How do you give back to your community?
“I feel fortunate to be a part of this wonderful community. I give back through sharing my passion for financial literacy and helping people of all ages become more confident handling money. As a member of MB Rotary and Leadership Manhattan, I volunteered at Jr. Achievement’s Finance Park to help high school seniors. I just finished a white paper on Women and Money and hope to have a children’s book published soon on how my daughters and I make managing money fun."
