Aera Home offers a unique collection of decorative accessories, home accents and custom furniture pieces−a blend of antique and modern styles. Owner Aleena Yaqoob has had a long fascination with art and design. “Since I can remember, I have always had an innate need to be creative—from painting to design to garden and crafts,” she says. “When I was 12, I decked out my bedroom in shades of electric blue (my poor parents!)” In December 2010, Aleena moved to Hermosa Beach from Denver, Colorado, looking for the perfect combination of location and business potential. She opened Aera Home in January 2011 after years of helping many friends with their own homes or getting hired to work on specific design projects. “I finally admitted that I’m just a compulsive decorator, so I opened a store with home accents and furnishings that reflect me and my personality (and not trends).”
What’s most rewarding about your work?
“As a shop owner, meeting people, working with them and helping with design environments that best meet their needs—all while creating beautiful spaces. When a client walks into the store, I want them to experience the atmosphere as inviting, worldly and multi-layered.”
What’s the best quick and inexpensive idea for a room redo?
“Color is the spice of life, so change the accent color. On a larger scale, you can change an accent wall or area. Smaller accents of color or accessories are also great; try it with throw pillows, table accents or lighting. Use brighter colors for summer, deeper colors for winter.”
How do you give back to your community?
“Aera Home is thrilled to be a part of Women for Women International. Proceeds from purchases made through the store help provide support, tools and resources to rebuild a life after war. Monthly contributions are made to help our sponsored sister obtain basic necessities for her family like food, clean water, and medicine, to pay school-related expenses for her children or to use the funds as seed capital to start an income-generating project.”
