Choura Events is a catering company that helps to inspire great events for their clients throughout Southern California. For four decades the company, owned by Ryan Choura, has facilitated all sizes of weddings, family reunions, parties, showers and corporate events such as conventions, business meetings and festivals. Ryan is a fourth-generation owner of the family business. His grandfather was in the restaurant business and owned meat markets throughout the Long Beach area. Ryan’s father grew the business into a catering and service business for convention and event centers—The Grand in Long Beach (run by Choura Events.) In 2007, Choura Events purchased the well-known rental company Anza Event Rentals and began to grow their integrated event services, including catering, throughout the South Bay.

Tell us about your executive chef.

“Executive Chef Ryan McIntyre heads up a culinary staff of 75, bringing new flavor profiles and menu selections into the mix. He helped open the W in San Francisco and worked for the W in Los Angeles before moving into private catering and joining Choura Events in 2009. He has unique sensibility around portions, and you can actually understand him when he explains how he creates his menus.”

Was there a defining moment in your career that guided you to where you
are now?

“Easy. When we served 10,000 guests in 20 minutes. When we finished, we all looked at each other like we had seen a ghost. It was amazing in a catering-geek sort of way.”

Does your family cook together outside the business?

“Yes, we are a close family. Plus we’re a family business. We’re a meat-and-potatoes family. My father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all journeyman meat cutters. We love beef. Best provisions. Cooked simply. Carry big tastes.”

Do you focus on cooking with local foods?

“Yes. For the last 32 years, my Dad has picked out all of our produce at the LA Market at 4 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. We buy from local growers and suppliers.”
